You may be able to get $10 on Ebay but it sounds like it is pretty worn so it may not find a buyer.This is the sort of book that stirs one so deeply that it is almost impossible to attempt to convey the impression it leaves. You have a book club edition and unfortunately they are only worth $5 or so. With a dust jacket maybe $75 or $100 for a nice one. If it doesn’t have a dust jacket you are looking at probably $15 or $20 for a Ninth Printing. Since your second printing sounds a bit worse than Wallace’s I would say $30 or $40 but you may be able to get a little more. The value isn’t much, maybe a couple of dollars. The Modern Library printed classics in a smaller format at cheaper prices. Book Club editions rarely identify what year they were printed. I am not sure the exact date when the first Book Club Edition came out but it was probably 10 or 15 years later.

The reason why Book Club Editions do not have much value even though they have the same 1939 copyright date is because none of them were printed in 1939. The paragraphs on the flap did change but that doesn’t matter because it is stated “First EDition” on the front flap, making it the “First State”. If it has the “First Edition” stated on the front flap of the dust jacket that is all that matters.

That is what I would try to get if I were selling it.

You should be able to get at least $75 out of a shrinkwrapped one.Ī Second Printing in nice condition without a dust jacket might be worth about $50.
